‘Tis the Season: Ways to Give to Mountain Housing Opportunities

Dec 18, 2024 | News

Everyone deserves a safe place to call home. Support Mountain Housing Opportunities with a gift this season to fuel our affordable housing programs year-round. Your donation stays local and helps create, repair, and preserve affordable homes right here in western North Carolina. This year, we hope you consider directing your donation to our Hurricane Helene Housing Recovery Fund.

For more information about any donation options or planned giving, please contact Allison Rollison, MHO’s Director of Philanthropy, at 828-254-4030 ext. 136 or via email at allison@mtnhousing.org. Thank you!

1 – Give Now

Make a gift online through our secure giving portal or send a gift in by mail. Download the optional gift form and mail it to Mountain Housing Opportunities, 64 Clingman Avenue, Suite 101, Asheville, NC 28801.

Honor or memorialize a loved one by contributing a gift in honor or in memory of someone who made an impact in your life

2 – Consider a Monthly Gift

Making a monthly contribution is one of the easiest ways you can support affordable housing in our region all year. Your monthly donation helps MHO build a reliable, community-based stream of support that is immediately invested in our suite of affordable housing services. Simply elect to make your gift recurring and choose the interval that’s right for you!

3 – Give through your Donor Advised Fund (DAF)

MHO is non-profit fundholder at the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina and is eligible to receive contributions from all charitable fund managers like Vanguard Charitable, Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, and others.

Are you 70 and ½ or older? Make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) to support MHO. These contributions count towards your required minimum distribution and won’t be included in your taxable income. Questions? Contact Allison Rollison (contact information above).

6 – Build a Lasting Legacy with a Planned Gift

Planned gifts can help meet your financial goals while helping to ensure everyone can access the affordable housing they deserve now and in the future. View our Planned Giving Options for including MHO in your will or trust on naming MHO as a beneficiary of a retirement plan, life insurance policy, or revocable trust. Why Your Gift Matters

Western North Carolina is experiencing an unprecedented shortage of affordable housing. Paths to homeownership for people earning low-to-moderate incomes are constrained by low supply and record-breaking prices. This causes rents to rise and creates high housing cost burdens for renters in the region. In Buncombe County alone, 53% of renter households pay over 30% of their monthly income on rent. Our affordability crisis has been exacerbated by devastation from Hurricane Helene. Across all of western North Carolina, an estimated 125,000 housing units were severely damaged or lost completely.

This is why affordable housing matters more than ever. MHO delivers safe, stable housing to thousands of people each year. MHO creates and preserves affordable apartment homes, helps individuals and families achieve homeownership through down payment assistance, builds new affordable homes for sale, and provides essential home repairs so people can stay healthy and housed in the homes they already own.

Your contribution stays local and supports housing programs and services for renters and homeowners. MHO was founded in Buncombe County, NC, and we are proud to be based in Asheville. We are an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit committed to lean operations and low-overhead costs. Our most recent financials show an overhead rate of just 16%.
