Our Commitment to Fiscal Transparency

Thoughtful and transparent stewardship of Mountain Housing Opportunities’ assets is a critical responsibility of our Board of Directors and our staff. MHO employs multiple layers of oversight to manage revenues, expenses, and assets to benefit the communities we serve.

Our Operating Budget

MHO leverages diverse revenue streams to fund operations. It includes contributions from private individuals and institutions, competitive local, state, and federal grants, and income from programs, services, and development. Overhead expenditures are essential for nonprofits to advance their mission. MHO operates with lean administrative and fundraising expenses: our most recent 990 demonstrates an 8% overhead rate.

Local and Independent

MHO is a local, independent, 501(c)(3) nonprofit community development corporation founded and based in Asheville, NC. We serve residents of Western North Carolina through our suite of affordable housing programs and services.

Building and Stewarding Affordability for Generations

MHO operates as a Community Housing Development Organization and a Community Development Financial Institution through our MHO Loan Fund. MHO and the MHO Loan Fund together steward $50 million in wholly-owned assets, plus an additional $130 million in multifamily assets for which MHO is a managing member of affordable rental and homeownership properties developed by MHO through LLCs.

A Network of Excellence

MHO is a part of the national NeighborWorks Network of Excellence, an affiliation of more than 240 nonprofit housing organizations in every state, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. MHO is rated an Exemplary NeighborWorks organization by the Organizational Assessment Division of NeighborWorks America. MHO is one of only four NeighborWorks organizations in North Carolina and the only one serving Western North Carolina.

Financial Reporting

MHO undergoes an independent audit every year and files an appropriate Form 990 with the Internal Revenue Service. Please see below for our most recent financial reporting documents. If you have any questions about these documents or our organization, please call our office at (828) 254-4030 or email info@mtnhousing.org.
