Legacy. What does that mean to MHO? 

Depending on who you ask, you’ll likely receive different answers. 

Our neighbors may speak to our tangible legacy through the developments built to provide low-income individuals and families with not only safe, attractive homes, but also connections and community. Others may say that our legacy can be found in the employees, who carry and champion MHO’s mission every day they come into work. 

At MHO, we believe our legacy isn’t just measured in buildings and completed projects. It’s rooted in the unwavering belief that when you put your mind, heart, and soul into the mission and vision that everyone deserves a safe, attractive, and affordable home, there’s no limit to what can be achieved.

Even in its beginning, this rings true. The founding of Mountain Housing Opportunities on July 25th, 1988, was led by a group of dedicated volunteers who banded together with a single purpose in mind: to make the impossible possible. 

Over the next 37 years, we would continue to do this. 

MHO programs like Community Rental Investments, Homeownership programs, and the MHO Loan Fund have opened the door to safe, attractive, and affordable housing for thousands in the community, breaking generational cycles and building lasting stability. Since our beginning, the Essential Home Repair program has served as a vital resource for many in Buncombe County facing repair issues, ensuring that everyone has access to a warm, secure place to call home. And soon enough, a new Resident Services program will expand our Asset Management program. 

Through these efforts, MHO has shown time and again that when we unite around the belief that everyone deserves a safe, affordable place to call home, real change happens, and that same hope and opportunity are possible for anyone to achieve. 

However, maintaining this legacy for 37 years has been no small feat, either.

Photos not only of our projects, but of families, historical communities, and the dedication and hard work of the staff at MHO, all who work together to continue building and improving homes, neighborhoods, communities, and lives, further building hope and dignity in the people we serve.
