Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO) announced today that it has received a NeighborWorks Flexible Impact Grant (NFIG) for $314,000 from NeighborWorks® America, a Congressionally chartered nonprofit corporation. The NFIGs totaled $78.8 million and were awarded to 245 organizations nationwide across the NeighborWorks network. The funding, made possible by an allocation from the U.S. Congress, supports scalable, community-driven solutions to increase housing supply, expand homeownership opportunities, and strengthen local economies.
The grant awards are designed to provide flexible, core operating support, allowing NeighborWorks network organizations to deploy funding where it is needed most. This commitment empowers MHO to deliver locally driven, impactful solutions in affordable housing, economic development, and community revitalization. Their continued support is essential to addressing the nation’s housing crisis, as each dollar they invest unlocks substantial private funding to expand the supply of safe, affordable homes. That impact is evident in projects like Star Point, a 60-unit affordable development in Asheville, and Starlight Cove, a 60-home affordable subdivision in Black Mountain.
“As a NeighborWorks chartered member for the past 18 years, we know firsthand that this network is a catalyst for developing affordable housing across America,” said Geoffrey Barton, President & CEO of MHO. “The $314,000 grant allows MHO to move quickly and deploy resources strategically to deliver real results for those who need it most. Every dollar from NeighborWorks helps us unlock additional investments, multiply our impact, and build communities where people can afford to live and thrive.”
In 2025, MHO supported over 2,000 households through affordable rentals, homeownership, and essential home repair, introduced a new Resident Services initiative to provide support for residents, and launched one of the most ambitious housing development efforts in its history. This includes completing over 230 repairs, managing 1,425 affordable rentals across 40 properties, and cultivating a pipeline for 127 affordable homes. Through collaborative action, MHO is building the foundation for a stronger, more resilient future in western North Carolina.
NeighborWorks’ approach and stewardship enables organizations like MHO to act, respond to shifting market conditions, and bring housing solutions to the communities they serve.
“NeighborWorks America can move resources quickly into the hands of organizations that know their communities best and are ready to act,” said NeighborWorks America President & CEO Marietta Rodriguez. “These grants are designed for impact. They provide flexible funding that organizations can put to work, whether that means building homes, preserving housing, or supporting families on their path to stability.”
MHO is proud to be part of a network that translates funding into direct, local impact, addressing the nation’s housing challenges through practical, community-driven solutions.
