Now more than three weeks since Hurricane Helene devastated our communities on Friday, September 27th, MHO has been working tirelessly to support our staff, residents, community, and partners. We promise to you, our community, that we will continue to update you with the most recent information, recovery efforts, and available resources to aid in our collective recovery from this disaster.
So far, MHO has ensured that every rental property is equipped with non-potable water tanks for flushing toilets, delivered general cleaning supplies and food, and assisted residents who wished to relocate by arranging alternative accommodations. None of this would have been possible without our incredible team, as well as the generous support from a wide network of partners, friends, and community members.

MHO is fortunate to report that the majority of our rental properties remain unharmed from flooding, high winds, and tree damage. Currently, power and non-potable water have been restored to every property, minus one complex on Depot Street. There are a few properties that suffered damage brought by flooding, mainly located in the River Arts District. These are:
1. Glen Rock Apartments, located at 372 Depot Street. The first level, all local businesses, were significantly damaged due to flooding over 6-8 ft. None of the residential apartments suffered flood damage. The downstairs commercial units are facing extensive remediation efforts, with all the damaged drywall, insulation, wiring, etc removed. The building is also undergoing mold remediation efforts, and we expect the building to make a full recovery.

2. Residences at Glen Rock Hotel, located at 408 Depot Street. The first level, all local businesses, were significantly damaged due to flooding over 12 ft. None of the residential apartments suffered flood damage. Mold remediation is underway. Due to being submerged underwater for an extended time, the electrical service in this complex suffered catastrophic damage and must be replaced in its entirety. Essential components are on backorder, which should arrive in 6 weeks. Because of this, this complex does not have power. Water service was restored on 10/21. Measures are being taken to ensure residents are supported during their disruptive but necessary temporary relocation.

3. River Glen Apartments, located at 1 River Glen Drive in Arden. Two apartments flooded, but each has been remediated with drywall, insulation, and wiring exposed to water removed. None of the other apartments flooded, and there are no known mold issues otherwise. The site did experience a significant culvert washout which has already been replaced.
Please know that MHO and our property management companies will not pursue any evictions or lease terminations due to nonpayment of rent, or charge any late fees for the months of October and November. We also are allowing all residents to break leases without penalty to allow flexibility in their longterm relocation if necessary due to the impacts of Helene. We are currently pursuing opportunities to assist residents who are out of work and hope to be able to share more information in the coming weeks, if not sooner. If you have any questions, please reach out to your PPM Site Manager, or email us at info@mtnhousing.org, and we will ensure your inquiries are directed to the appropriate staff.
As Geoffrey mentioned in his letter a few weeks ago, “There are still many critical needs in the weeks and months ahead. As we find brief moments to imagine what the future holds, let’s envision a more resilient region, with plentiful, well-located affordable housing resources. We stand ready to help the communities of western North Carolina rebuild. Just as we have for the last 36 years of our organization’s history, we will be guided by our mission to build hope and dignity in the people we serve. Together, let’s rebuild hope.”
Please consider supporting MHO with a donation to our Hurricane Helene Housing Recovery Fund, our local fund that supports resident emergency assistance, rental assistance, essential home repair, and long-term housing recovery. Your support ensures recovery efforts across our communities. Thank you, all!
