Accounting Assistant (Contract)

Time Commitment: Part-Time, 10-15 hours/week
Experience Level: Entry-level or intermediate
Team: Finance; reports to Finance Manager with additional support from Finance Director
Hourly pay rate: $30/hour
Location: Asheville, NC (not a virtual role)

The Opportunity
Mountain Housing Opportunities (MHO) has delivered affordable housing solutions for income-limited homeowners and renters in and around Buncombe County since 1988. As we continue to scale our work to meet our region’s affordable housing needs, MHO is seeking a part-time Accounting Assistant. Your primary responsibilities will be to prepare and process payroll and accounts payable using internal MIP accounting software. You will also enter deposits into the accounting system as needed. You must be initiative-taking and self-directed with excellent communication skills.

Job Responsibilities

  • Review, prepare and process bi-weekly payroll using internal accounting software
  • Prepare and maintain payroll records
  • Prepare and make federal and state tax deposits each payroll period
  • Prepare and enter direct deposits into employee checking accounts bi-weekly
  • Distribute employee pay stubs each payroll period
  • Prepare and file W-2’s and 1099’s at year end
  • Review, reconcile, and enter invoices into the accounting system for payment to vendors
  • Perform weekly or bi-weekly check runs as needed
  • Enter deposits into accounting system as needed

Reports to: Finance Manager

Qualifications/Skills

  • Proven basic knowledge of accounting principles
  • Basic understanding of accounts payable/invoice pay functions
  • Ability to calculate, and manage tax reporting
  • Good math skills and the ability to spot numerical errors
  • Excellent data entry skills
  • High degree of accuracy and diligence
  • Organizational skills
  • Proficiency in meeting deadlines
  • Ability to manage sensitive, confidential information

Education/Experience
2-year associate degree in accounting, 4-year Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or a minimum of twenty- four credit hours in accounting or related field or equivalent work experience.
