You’re invited to attend the photo exhibition of Isiah Rice at the Eagle Street Market Place Community Gallery on Friday, May 24th from 5:30-8: 30 pm at 19 Eagle Street in Asheville.
Rice’s photos provide vivid images of life in the city’s black community from the 1950s through the 1970s—a time when African-Americans comprised roughly one-fifth of the city’s population. “Rice’s photographs powerfully capture the world about him [both mingled and divided] along lines of race. There is a respectful distance in a Rice photograph, a sense of in-betweenness, and a sense of seeing the world as it is.”
