2019 Experience The Block

Date:November 19, 2019
Venue/Location:Eagle Market Place Apartments and YMI Cultural Center

Experience the Block is an ongoing awareness effort and capital campaign to honor and celebrate the vibrant history and prosperous future of the Eagle Street Market Streets neighborhood and the new Eagle Market Place. Eagle Market Place is a collective partnership between Eagle Market Streets Development Corporation (EMSDC) and Mountain Housing Opportunities, Inc. (MHO) and represents a unique model for revitalization efforts to one of the oldest thriving African American commercial business
districts in the country.

In the early 2000’s, EMSDC thoughtfully acquired key buildings in the Eagle Market Streets neighborhood in an effort to preserve the rich history of the area and contribute to its dynamic resurgence. These properties included 19-23 Eagle Street (the Dr. Collette building), 38 South Market Street (the Del Cardo building), and several smaller buildings in the area.

In 2009, under the leadership of Mayor Terry M. Bellamy, the Eagle Market Place (EMP) partnership with EMSDC and MHO was born. The focus of this partnership was to renovate existing buildings in the Eagle Market Street neighborhood and provide safe, attractive, and affordable rental homes and commercial lease space. Together, they equally participated in the planning, development, and operations at Eagle Market Place.

On November 19, 2019, Eagle Market Streets Development Corporation and Mountain Housing Opportunities collaboratively hosted the Experience the Block ribbon cutting and fundraiser. This event celebrated the revitalization efforts recently completed and pay homage to the individuals and businesses that have helped establish and grow Eagle Market Streets.
