Merrimon Area Affordable Housing Wins Key Vote

A proposed 60-unit apartment complex for low-income workers won a key vote Wednesday night after hours of debate between neighbors, affordable housing advocates and others. The Asheville Planning and Zoning Commission voted 5-1 to recommend that the City Council change zoning rules to pave the way for the project behind the Merrimon Avenue post office.

Supporters of a planned apartment complex off Merrimon Avenue claim it will provide desperately needed affordable rental housing. But the proposed 60-unit development will come at a price, nearby residents say, with two three-story buildings looming over existing homes.

The proposed apartment complex is up for a vote tonight with the Asheville Planning and Zoning Commission.

For $7 less a month than she was paying in rent, Michelle Kozma now owns a 2,250-square-foot house in Leicester bordered by 50 undeveloped acres with views of grazing cows.

“My oldest boy has lived in nine different houses over his life. My younger one, this is his third house, and he's going to get to live here all of his life,” she said. “They know that, and they love it.”
